Day-1 Is a Number, Not a Date

M&AJune 2026·5 min read

Treat Day-1 as a number you protect, not a date you survive.

Where Deal Value Actually Leaks

The leak rarely shows up in the deal model. It shows up in the first 90 days: customers churn while sales coverage is unclear, two of everything keeps running, and decisions queue because nobody knows who decides. Every week of ambiguity costs real money.

The Day-1 Operating Model

Before close, write down the simple version: who decides what, who covers which account, which system is the system of record, and what stops on day one. One page per question beats a hundred-slide integration deck nobody opens.

Track Synergies Weekly, by Owner

Every synergy sized, phased, and owned by a named person. The ones that will not survive contact with reality get marked early, so the deal case stays honest.

  • A sales coverage map agreed before close, not after.
  • One CRM decision, made once.
  • A weekly synergy tracker with a target and a captured-to-date column.
  • A 90-day integration backlog in priority order, with owners.

Day-1 readiness is not ceremony. It is the cheapest insurance the deal will ever buy.
